Causes of Cracked Heels

Cracked heels are a common foot ailment stemming from dry and thickened skin around the heel edge. While they often cause cosmetic concerns, they can also trigger discomfort and pain. When left untreated, cracked heels may even lead to infection. Studies indicate that among adults who have encountered cracked skin on their feet, women report the condition more frequently than men. Deep cracks can be painful and bleed, particularly while standing. Obesity, wearing ill-fitting shoes, and prolonged standing can contribute to developing cracked heels. The skin's lack of moisture and decreased elasticity, especially under the heel's fat pad, can worsen the situation. Additional culprits include wearing open-back or poorly fitting shoes, friction, improper gait, and dry, cold weather. Additionally,  athlete's foot, fungal infections, and heel spurs can significantly contribute to getting cracked heels. Countermeasures involve moisturizers, keratolytic creams, cotton socks, and liquid bandages. If soreness, redness, swelling, or severe pain from cracked heels persists for days, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist for a consultation and treatment.

Cracked heels are unsightly and can cause further damage to your shoes and feet. If you have any concerns, contact Abeer M. Foteh, DPM from Greater Houston Foot Centers. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

Cracked heels appear unappealing and can make it harder for you walk around in sandals. Aside from looking unpleasant, cracked heels can also tear stockings, socks, and wear out your shoes. There are several methods to help restore a cracked heel and prevent further damage.

How Do You Get Them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – Wearing socks with medicated creams helps lock in moisture.

Moisturizers – Applying both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – These exfoliate and remove dead skin, which allows for smoother moisturizer application and better absorption into the skin.

Change in Diet

Eating healthy with a well-balanced diet will give the skin a fresh and radiant look. Your body responds to the kinds of food you ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc supplements can also revitalize skin tissue.

Most importantly, seek professional help if unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels. A podiatrist will help you with any questions or information needed.

Foot Problems Caused by High Heels

Wearing high heels may elevate your style, but they can also lead to a wide range of foot problems. These fashionable footwear choices, with their high heels and narrow toe boxes, can contribute to pain, discomfort, and potential health issues. One common problem is metatarsalgia, characterized by pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot due to increased pressure. In addition, high heels alter your posture, causing an increased load on the forefoot and reducing shock absorption. Another concern is the development of bunions. These painful, bony bumps can form at the base of the big toe as a result of the prolonged pressure and unnatural positioning of the foot in high heels. High heels also can lead to Achilles tendon issues, as the raising of the heel can cause the tendon to tighten and potentially result in tendonitis. To mitigate these problems, experts suggest limiting the amount of time high heels are worn as well as their height. Opt instead for shoes with lower heel heights, wide toe boxes, and cushioning insoles. If foot pain persists, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for personalized advice and treatment options if needed.

High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Abeer M. Foteh, DPM from Greater Houston Foot Centers. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because of their many styles and societal appeal.  Despite this, high heels can still cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

Which Parts of My Body Will Be Affected by High Heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – May shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – Heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – They decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  The vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What Kinds of Foot Problems Can Develop from Wearing High Heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How Can I Still Wear High Heels and Maintain Foot Health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.  If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work.  Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock. Full foot inserts or metatarsal pads are available.

Heel Pain Causes

Heel pain is a common ailment that can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. Several factors contribute to heel pain, with the most prevalent cause being plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the thick band of tissue running across the bottom of the foot. Other culprits include Achilles tendinitis, heel spurs, and bursitis. Lifestyle factors such as excessive weight, improper footwear, and repetitive overuse during physical activities can exacerbate the condition. Effective treatments for heel pain focus on reducing inflammation, managing pain, and promoting healing. Adequate rest and taking over-the-counter pain relievers may offer temporary relief. Stretching exercises and wearing orthotic inserts can provide significant relief. Early intervention and a comprehensive approach to treatment can help individuals regain their mobility and alleviate the discomfort associated with heel pain. If you have heel pain, it is strongly suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can properly diagnose the cause and offer effective treatment methods.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Abeer M. Foteh, DPM of Greater Houston Foot Centers. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Choosing a Toddler’s First Walking Shoes

Most experts recommend letting babies go barefoot until they are getting ready to walk. However, finding the right shoes for their first steps can be confusing. The first concern is choosing the right size shoes for your toddler’s feet, and with an increase in age, the shoe size may change frequently. One way to determine the correct size is by inserting the pinky finger between the heel of the shoe and the child’s ankle. It should be snug. Then press the tip of the shoe while the baby is standing. There should be about half an inch of space. Next, choose shoes that are made of lightweight materials and are flexible. Shoes that are easy to put on and take off are desired, along with washability. It is thought that toddlers will need a new pair of shoes every two to three months. Hand-me-down shoes are discouraged as each child has a different foot structure. For additional guidance on choosing walking shoes for your child, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Abeer M. Foteh, DPM of Greater Houston Foot Centers. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

How Rheumatoid Arthritis Affects the Feet

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints. Because the feet have numerous joints, they are often a target for this disease. Tenderness, swelling, and stiffness in the joints are the major symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis or RA. Loss of range of motion and joint deformity are other symptoms. Foot deformities, such as bunions or hammertoes, can be caused by the erosion of the joints from RA. Because there is such a high risk of damage to the feet because of rheumatoid arthritis, it is wise to get a diagnosis sooner than later. Treatment can include medication, low-impact exercises, customized orthotics, and footwear recommendations. A podiatrist can fit the patient with orthotics built to fit the foot precisely and provide the necessary support and cushioning. For more information on how to deal with rheumatoid arthritis that is affecting the feet, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact Abeer M. Foteh, DPM of Greater Houston Foot Centers. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.
