What Causes Heel Pain?

Heel pain can have a wide variety of causes, but the location of the pain can help to guide a proper diagnosis. Pain along the bottom of the foot can be caused by plantar fasciitis, heel pad syndrome, plantar warts, calcaneal stress fractures, nerve entrapment, or a neuroma. Pain in the middle of the foot can be due to peroneal tendinopathy, sinus tarsi syndrome, or tarsal tunnel syndrome. Pain in the back of the foot can be caused by Sever’s disease, Achilles tendinopathy, or a Haglund deformity. Seeing a podiatrist is the first step to healing your heel pain. A podiatrist will be able to examine your heel, ask questions about your current symptoms and medical history, and perform the tests necessary to diagnose and treat your heel pain.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

How the Plantar Fascia Causes Heel Pain

The plantar fascia is the flat band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel to the toes, ultimately supporting the arch of the foot.  Plantar fasciitis is the result of inflammation or a strain of this ligament, and it is the most common cause of heel pain.  Plantar fasciitis is common amongst patients who are middle-aged, frequently on their feet (like athletes and soldiers), are overweight, have high arches, or have tight Achilles tendons.  Plantar fasciitis pain is most often the worst in the morning after getting out of bed or sitting for a long time.  Patients who are at risk for plantar fasciitis, or are suffering from heel pain, should visit with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis of their heel pain.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

Different Types of Corns

corn on the foot is often the result of increased pressure in a small area. They can gradually develop from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, and typically appear in different areas of the foot. A soft corn is found between the toes, and can develop from the toes rubbing together from pressure that is exerted on them. This type of corn can cause severe pain and discomfort, and may affect the way you walk. Hard corns are found on the outer edge of the pinky toe, or on the bottom of the foot. Mild relief may be found when the foot is soaked in warm water, and the corn may begin to diminish when the correct size and style shoes are worn. Symptoms of an Ankle Sprain

Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that support the ankle stretch too much or tear. Depending on the severity of your sprain, you may experience symptoms that range from mild pain and swelling to debilitating pain that makes walking nearly impossible. The pain of an ankle sprain often has a sudden onset, usually after a fall or blow to the ankle, and progressively worsens over the course of a few hours. There may be swelling or bruising on or around the ankle. You may also have difficulty moving the affected ankle. Instability at the ankle joint can make it difficult to walk.
